A spiritual awakening. What is it and what did mine look like?
A spiritual awakening…. sounds kinda trippy and to be honest it makes me feel a little uncomfortable saying it because in regular circles, it doesn’t make much sense. But that’s what I had and I can explain it to you.
So what is a spiritual awakening? The definition of a spiritual awakening that most strongly resonates with me and aligns to my experience, is when you quite suddenly realise you are not your thoughts, not your emotions and not your body. It is also known as a kundalini awakening, “an opening of perception to an inner world that was previously unknown to the individual… resulting in an expanded and intensified awareness, including increased perceptual abilities, feelings of connection and well-being” (Woollacott. H, Kason. Y, Park. R, Science Direct, V17, Issue 6, Nov-Dec 2021).
Spiritual awakenings can happen quite suddenly, or in my case it was a slow build to a crescendo culminating in feeling like I was on another planet, or actually all those around me were on another planet; mad, unaware, unawoke, living an existence on an earth plane, material world which isn’t really REAL. It can last intensely for a couple of weeks, or in my case, a couple of months until all the sensory overdrive, thoughts and surreal feelings settle down to business as usual. It’s quite the trip.
Why does this happen? It really is unknown. There are a few theories but anecdotal evidence suggests it can happen through trauma or repeated traumatic/near death experiences, lineage ie. it’s in your blood line or in my case, through deep diving into psychic sense development.
I started to deep dive into psychic sense development when I was sick and pretty much all I was able to do was listen to podcasts. I found the podcast Things You Can’t Unhear and binged on episodes like Liz Volpe // The Masked Medium, Isabeau Maxwell // Ghosts Are People Too - Crossing Over and The In-Between and Vanessa // Becoming That Psychic Medium You Always Knew You Were. These peeps and many more interviewed working in this field, indirectly encouraged me to develop my strong intuition/sixth sense. How? They were just regular folk from previous regular professions such as lawyers, graphic designers and government jobs (some also skeptics prior to their spiritual awakening). This normalised everything for me. While they had different spiritual awakening experiences there was also a common thread of experience and outcome.
What does a spiritual awakening look like? What happened to me?
For me, it was a slow build. After months of intense daily practise at the top and tail end of each day asking for signs, answers to yes/no questions and meditations to connect with higher self/source, lucid dreaming went wild, I started catching glimpses of light or “something” in my peripheral vision, hearing songs loudly in my head, and yes/no signs to answers were delivered on demand. At its peak I felt like I was on another planet. An outsider looking in, watching from a higher place, a place of separateness., looking around at my family and my life, questioning how all this came to be. Who was I? What was my life? Who were the people in it? It felt like pure madness. There was also this overwhelming urge to let everyone know that nothing really mattered, this world was not real, there was all the more to “it”. It stayed like this for about 2 months before things calmed. I also was experiencing tingling sensations in different parts of my body.
How to get through and not be committed to a mad-house?
In a nutshell, what I did was very consciously feel my feet on the ground ALL THE TIME. I continuously grounded myself staying in the here and now even though everyone and everything around me felt wild. This helped tremendously to keep myself in check, biting my tongue and getting through each day as I went through this experience. I came out on the other side in tact, uncommitted and able to balance the two worlds with calm and ease.
If you are going through this, you can do this too.
And as with anything, reach out for the right support with the right peeps if needed. Hearing other’s experiences can help tremendously as well.
